WASHINGTON – The Northeast Maglev today announced the formation of the Northeast Maglev Advisory Board, which will advise and assist in the development of a high-speed solution to the increasingly congested Northeast Corridor utilizing Superconducting Maglev (SCMAGLEV) technology. SCMAGLEV, the fastest train in the world, will whisk passengers from Washington, DC to New York City in an hour.
“Led by former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, the bipartisan Board will work with policymakers, elected officials, regulators, media and the public to better inform them of the potential transformation of the Northeast Corridor that could occur by deploying a 311 mph train,” said Wayne Rogers, the Northeast Maglev Chairman and CEO.

Or imagine traveling from BWI Airport to downtown Washington, DC in eight minutes,” said Senator Daschle. “That will be the reality for millions of Americans if we can move forward with this important project, revolutionizing business and leisure travel and bringing tremendous economic benefits to the region.”
The Northeast Corridor, between Washington, DC and New York City, is a $2.25 trillion economy representing 15 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product, approximately the same as the United Kingdom. Congestion is constraining economic growth and negatively impacting personal lives. The SCMAGLEV system is a safe and transformative transportation solution that will revolutionize how people live and work in the country’s most congested region. The Northeast Corridor is ideal for the SCMAGLEV system: high density, a number of large urban areas in relatively close proximity and demonstrated high demand for business, as well as personal, travel.
The SCMAGLEV system is a proven system that operates at speeds in excess of 300 mph using superconducting magnets. America’s fastest train, the Acela, averages 86 mph on the Northeast Corridor. SCMAGLEV technology is unlike other high-speed railways that utilize steel wheel on rails – the same technology in use for more than 100 years. SCMAGLEV trains travel in a U shaped guideway and are held in position by magnetic forces. This automatically ensures that the train is kept securely in the center of the guideway, making the system free from derailment. These forces also propel the train forward.
SCMAGLEV will move more people, faster at greater benefit to the public. The Northeast Maglev envisions a public-private partnership to deploy an SCMAGLEV project that:
- Fosters economic development throughout the Northeast Corridor
- Improves mobility for those who live and work in the region
- Creates thousands of new direct and indirect jobs
- Brings transformational technology, originally conceived in the U.S., but deployed overseas, back home
- Greens the environment by utilizing an advanced, low-carbon transportation solution

“Policymakers on both sides of the aisle have long debated the best solutions to address the growing challenges caused by the growth of the Northeast Corridor,” said Governor Pataki. “With current budget shortfalls and competing infrastructure investment priorities, mass transit investments that don't leverage the most innovative technologies just don't make sense for our country's future. SCMAGLEV technology is clearly the best solution.”
“America is a country built on bold, transformative ideas and the time is now to utilize technology, conceived in America, but implemented outside the U.S., to solve our transportation challenges and remain competitive in the global marketplace,” said Governor Whitman.
“The SCMAGLEV system is the fastest and most efficient ground-based transportation system in the world,” said Kevin Plank. “Deploying this technology in the U.S. will bring us up to par with other industrialized nations such as Japan and France where maglev and other high-speed rail services have already been deployed.”
