At Northeast Maglev, we’re about more than just building a train—we’re about creating opportunities and driving economic growth for minority and women-owned businesses in our local communities. This year, we hosted two impactful Resource Breakfasts—one in May at Coppin State University and another in September at Bowie State University. These events were all about giving Minority Business Enterprises (MBE) and Women Business Enterprises (WBE) the tools, insights, and connections they need to thrive.
Attendees got actionable insights on how they can ensure their businesses are ready to capitalize on the $4 billion in business opportunities for MBEs and WBEs the SCMAGLEV project will generate. From breaking down how transportation drives economic growth to strategies for accessing contracts, we’re here to make sure no one is left behind. Some of our guest speakers included Dawn Medley, president & CEO of FSC First, and Timothy Smoot, senior vice president, CFO, and co-founder of Meridian Management Group, Inc. We also had special remarks from Aisha Braveboy, Maryland State’s Attorney, and Arthur Ellis, Senator for the State of Maryland.
Lisa Harris, owner of The Water Hole & The Well 34, captured the spirit of these events perfectly. “It’s not just about business—it’s about building a community where small businesses can thrive and support one another,” Lisa shared. Her words remind us why these gatherings matter; they’re about real people building real connections and success.
We’ve also been working directly with MBEs like Eastwood Painting, who recently gave the front of our building a fresh new look. Their phenomenal work shows just how much expertise MBEs bring to the table, and we can’t wait to add more projects like this to the roster in 2025.
As Bill Scott said, “This project isn’t just about transportation; it’s about building an inclusive ecosystem where MBEs and WBEs thrive.” That’s the heart of what we do.
